This is an odd, sad little book about a middle-aged English widow who uses her capital to open a bookshop in an English village in 1959-60, running afoul of the town matriarch in doing so. The matriarch then uses all the resources at her disposal to drive the bookshop owner out of business–and, while she is at it, out of town for good. I assumed that somehow good would prevail over evil in the end–only it didn’t!
