The Healing Power of Pets: Harnessing the Amazing Ability of Pets to Make and Keep People Happy and Healthy

Posted by nliakos on September 24, 2013

by Dr. Marty Becker (Hyperion 2002)

This is similar to the last one. In Part One, “The Healing Power of Pets,” there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that people are comforted and healed by animals. In Part Two, “The Pet Prescription,” Becker offers advice for selecting an appropriate animal to share your life. Part Three,  “Deepening the Bond,” has quizzes and checklists to see if you’re getting it right. I was not so interested in the second and third parts, because for many reasons, I have no pets now (although I used to) and have no plans to acquire one (more’s the pity), but I enjoyed reading about kids and pets, hippotherapy, therapy animals (included one amazing case where a pet dog taught himself how to signal an approaching diabetic seizure), pets and mental health, heart health, cancer, autism and so on.

I’m presently reading The Signal and the Noise, this year’s First Year Book at UMD, but I have put it down in order to reread Tuesdays with Morrie, which I do periodically because of all the wonderful life lessons it contains. I need reminding every so often–and especially now,  since a friend of mine has been diagnosed with ALS.
